TJURINGA EMU PRODUCTS
Background
Emu Farming commenced in Queensland in 1988
when the Aboriginal Emu Farm at Cherbourg, was permitted a
once only collection of 300 emus from the wild. In November
1991 commercial emu farming was approved by cabinet. Progeny
from the original captured birds from Cherbourg as well as
emus from other states has provided the breeding stock for
all farms in Queensland.
Capture of birds from the wild, for breeding
or product sale is illegal in all states of Australia. This
makes emu farming different to kangaroo harvesting and
provides farmers with the opportunity to sell birds of a
known age and quality.
To farm Emus in Queensland a Licence from the
Department of Environment and Heritage is required. Licence
holders need to comply with strict guidelines which include
running a minimum of 50 birds on a minimum of 8 ha of land.
These guidelines make emu farming more regulated than for
domestic stock, ostrich farming and kangaroo harvesting.
The three main products produced from Emus are
oil, meat and leather, although emu eggs are highly sought
after for carving and painting. Eggs are also used in
quiches or for sponge cakes which are real delicacies.

COMPANY PROFILE
In 1993 emu farming commenced at Tjuringa and
we are currently running around 700 emus of all ages and
carrying out our own emu oil research program. In 1997
Tjuringa Emu Products Pty. Ltd. was established to market
our own products.
The background of all birds that are processed
is known, which enables the company to stand by its
guarantee of continuity of supply of a high quality,
nutritious meat product. The birds have been fed on a
combination of pasture, grain and vitamins resulting in a
farmed product that is chemical free and consistently
produces memorable tender, tasty meals.
Birds are processed in QSAFE licensed
facilities to ensure that food safety standards are
maintained at all stages. All fresh meat is vacuum sealed to
maintain freshness and flavour as well as preventing
contamination.
